Metal Halide
Metal Halide is a type of high-intensity discharge (HID) gas discharge lamp. As a result, metal-halide lamps have high luminous efficiency of around 75 – 100 lumens per watt, which is about twice that of mercury vapour lights and 3 to 5 times that of incandescent lights and produce an intense white light. Lamp life is 6,000 to 15,000 hours. They are used for wide area overhead lighting of commercial, industrial, and public spaces, such as parking lots, sports arenas, factories, and retail stores.
Application Areas
- Shop Interiors
- Display Windows
- Reception
- Foyers
- Accent / Decorative Lighting
Common Metal Halide Types:
G12
The Metal Halide G12 lamp is a single ended globe that is most commonly used in commercial spaces, store front display windows and other general retail applications. It is a compact lamp that offers stable colour over its lifetime. The crisp light is highly efficient with a relatively low heat output. The G12 generally comes in two colours Warm White and Cool White.
G8.5
A single ended globe commonly used in small sized commercial downlights, store front displays and general retail lighting. It features a stable colour impression over its lifetime, UV block quartz outer bulb for reducing fading risks and high lamp efficacy resulting in low operating costs and little heat generation.
Par30
These lamps offer excellent colour consistency from a highly efficient compact source and can feature a long lifespan. The 70w Par30 lamps can operate on standard or electronic ballast. These globes are common in shop interiors and store front windows.
High-Bay
Metal halide high bay lighting (also known as elliptical) allows users to illuminate large areas with very few lights commonly used in commercial and industrial locations. High Bay lights generally have an aluminium reflector which allows a beam of light to reflect downwards to the floor area. Other types of high bay lights have a prismatic reflector which illuminates shelving etc. from the floor to the ceiling.
Double Ended
The double ended metal halide lamps are a high intensity discharge lamps that produce high light output for their size, making them a compact, powerful and efficient light source. These are very common in retail locations and shopping centres commonly used in shop interiors, display windows. Offering a uniform distribution of light and a long lifespan and high efficiency. They come in a warm white, neutral white, daylight and cool daylight colours.
Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL)
A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), energy-saving light, and compact fluorescent tube, is a fluorescent lamp designed to replace an incandescent lamp; some types fit into light fixtures formerly used for incandescent lamps. CFLs are energy saving globes, which last longer and use far less energy than traditional light bulbs for the same level of light intensity. There are two major types of CFLs: screw-in and plug-in. Both come in a wide variety of wattages, sizes, colour temperatures, and base types, and they are known primarily for their efficiency, long life, low cost, and ease of upgrading.
- Switching from incandescent lighting to compact fluorescent lighting the average consumer can save 50 to 80% in energy costs without any loss in lighting.
- The average compact florescent bulb lasts 8 to 10 times longer than any incandescent bulb.
Product Benefits:
- Excellent Price / Performance
- Fast lumen ramp-up
- Quick return on investment
- Great variety of colours
PLC Energy Saving Lamps
Part of the CFL family the PLC lamps are able to provide the same amount of light as the twin tube CFL lamps of an equivalent wattage, the sole difference is that they are half as big as the twin-tube CFLs. For this reason, the PLC compact fluorescent bulbs fit perfectly in small lamps and other similar applications. Also, it must be mentioned that there are two main types of lamps: the 4 pin PLC and the 2 pin PLC. The finish of the lamp should be taken into consideration mainly for aesthetical purposes: the lamps can have a cool white finish, a warm white finish or a special daylight finish.
Application Areas:
- Shops
- Offices / Public Buildings
- Supermarkets / Department Stores
- Industry
- Hotels / Restaurants
PLL Compact Fluorescent Lamps
Another part of the CFL range of globes the PLL compact fluorescent lamps have a lifespan on average 15 times longer than that of incandescence lamps. Apart from their long lifespan and low energy consumption they are also known for their excellent luminous efficacy. The PLL lamps are also very popular in commercial use, especially since they are very environmentally friendly. Businesses can save cost and contribute to reducing energy waste and pollution by replacing their globes to PLL compact fluorescent lamps. They come in a variety of shapes and colour.
Product Benefits:
- Very Economical
- Good quality of light
- Long service life
- Improved maintenance
T5 & T8 Fluorescent Tubes
These tubes replaced the old and inefficient T12 Fluorescent Tubes. The T stand for tubular while the number represents the thickness or diameter of the tube in eighths of an inch. The T8 and T5 continue to be a reliable, energy efficient choice for a multitude of general applications. VIP Lighting have a large selection of T5 and T8 tubes.
- T12 = old & inefficient
- T8 = higher efficiency
- T5 = highest efficiency
Product Benefits
- Much lower total cost of ownership
- Lower maintenance costs
- Longer service life
- Better for the environment with less disposals
- Natural colours
Mercury Vapour
Mercury vapour lamps are more energy efficient than incandescent and most fluorescent lights, with luminous efficacies of 35 to 65 lumens/watt. Their other advantages are a long bulb lifetime in the range of 24,000 hours and a high intensity, clear white light output. For these reasons, they are used for large area overhead lighting. Clear mercury lamps produce white light with a bluish-green tint due to mercury’s combination of spectral lines. This is not flattering to human skin colour, so such lamps are typically not used in retail stores.
Application Areas:
- Factory / Workshops
- Industrial installations
- Workshops
- Pedestrian Zones
- Car Parks
Halogen Globes
The halogen lamp is also known as a quartz halogen or tungsten halogen lamp. It is an advanced form of the incandescent lamp. They are filled with halogen gas, have a tungsten filament and are enclosed in quartz glass. The bulb is stronger than standard glass in order to contain the high pressure. Since the mid-1990s halogen lamps have grown in their commercial use with applications like track lighting becoming popular. Halogen globes come in several different types.
- Product Benefits:
- Small / Lightweight
- No mercury used
- Longer life than conventional incandescent
- Instant switch on to full brightness / No warm up time
- Dimmable
Common Halogen Types:
Down Lights
A smalldirect-lighting unit, usually recessed in the ceiling and directing light downward only. There are two types of lamps for recessed lighting: directional and diffuse. Directional lamps (R, BR, PAR, and MR) contain reflectors that direct and control the light. Diffuse lamps (A, S, PS, and G) control light distribution through their omni directional light. The housings come in various sizes based on the diameter of the circular opening where the lamp is installed. The most commonly used sizes are 4, 5 and 6 inches in diameter.
Bi-Pin
This type of halogen is sometimes referred to as two-pin or bi-pin socket. These are used on many small incandescent light bulbs especially halogen lamps. They provide great illumination and are ideal for mirror lighting, entrance areas and retail shops and office areas. These lights contain no mercury and have an average lifespan of 2,000 hours.
Halospot
Halospot lights provide brilliant accent lighting within shops, restaurants, hotels and other prestigious applications. They contain a UV filter and cap for reduced glare and ease of handling. Average lifespan is 3,000 hours and are 100% dimmable.
Halopar
Commonly used for general illumination in shops, restaurants, hotels and other prestigious areas. These lights come with a whole glass reflector for brilliant lighting effects. The Halopar globe also has a UV filter and are 100% dimmable.
G9
The G9 Halogen systems have a variety of practical uses. Instead of a screw base they have two looped prongs of thin metal that look like stiff wires. They are often used for accent lighting, desk lighting, hanging lights (often called pendant lighting). In retail these lights are also common set under cabinets and drawers.
